Focus

Read the controls and intent below. The module preloads on supported layouts; only Start begins the run.

Conflict response

Focus — setup

Press ← or → for the CENTER arrow, ignoring the surrounding arrows. Left/right pads are an alternative.

Finish condition
40 trials · 1.5-second response window each
Input and controls
Arrow keys recommended; keyboard and pointer-pad responses are different conditions. Wide viewport required. Pause/Resume and optional fullscreen are available during play. Aim drills also offer pointer lock.
Read the result
Correct incongruent mean RT (ms), lower is better; read beside accuracy. Mode-specific points are secondary, not a universal skill grade.

Fixed-protocol benchmark. Anonymous raw telemetry is submitted automatically on completion for server validation and provisional ranking. Acceptance is not guaranteed. A paused/restarted nontracking run instead stays local-only and unranked.

Browser-observed, same-setup relative measurements; not physical latency or a guaranteed improvement in games. All Arena tasks are visual; no auditory drill.

The science, playfully

Eriksen flanker · selective attention

The science behind it

The flanker task is one of psychology's cleanest tests of selective attention: a center arrow flanked by others pointing the opposite way. When the flankers disagree, responses can slow — that congruency effect is how much irrelevant noise leaks into your decision.

Reading your score

You race on your speed when you are correct on the hard, incongruent trials; the interference number (incongruent minus congruent) shows how much the distractors cost you. One small interference value alone does not establish better filtering.

The honest limits

Interference is the gap between two noisy measurements, so it is extra jittery and needs many trials to settle — treat one round as a rough read. Browser-observed, same-setup relative; a timing-resolution estimate is not a physical confidence interval.
